In July, Dorothy had the family down to a friend's place in Laguna Beach for a week. This was to be the last family gathering before John and Dorothy's deaths little more than four months later.

Dorothy shortly thereafter consulted a doctor about abdominal pain and cancer was discovered. She went to Sacramento to live with John Robert and to receive chemotherapy. As she could no longer tend to John's needs, he was placed in a care facility also in Sacramento.
This was a fast-progressing cancer, and by the time John Robert wrote Mrs. Denlinger, he advised the family that all that could really be done for Dorothy was to relieve pain. She was cognizant of this and wrote letters of instruction to Paul and Marian regarding the distrbution of some of her things shortly before her death, but with the hope that the family could regather for Christmas.
