Dorothy Griffin's career reached its zenith. She started to plan her retirement and settled on the idea of living in a condominium on the coast or in Salt Lake, or both. She toured a number of condominium projects to decide which one she might purchase. On one trip she was with Florence Ross and they found a condominium on top of a bluff overlooking the ocean, north of San Deigo. From the window one could see way up the coast, out to Catalina island, and down to San Deigo. The offering price was $44,000. Florence said "oh, I can't stand it. It makes me dizzy to look out that window." So Dorothy and Forence went on to look at other prospects. Of course, John's condition might worsen and they might retire in their LaCanada home. In 1973, Dorothy had the kitchen in the LaCanada home remodeled.

Dorothy's long school career was drawing to an end. Her normal retirement would have been in June of 1974, but the school district asked here to stay on another year. So she did. In June of 1975 the time finally came for Dorothy to retire. She had been involved as a teacher or administrator in the school district since 1953. Several newspaper articles appeared concerning her retirement and her accomplishments at the school district. A "retirement tea" was held in her honor on June 11, 1975.

"The tea was a smashing success in my memory! Hospitality House in Descanso Gardens is such a lovely, lovely place. And all the people I liked so in school for so many years, who have now retired, came, as well as all the elementary people and guidance people from the secondary schools. But the only time I cried was when a sixth grade chorus song to me--songs from "Sound of Music" I had them go in and they ate up most of the food for the tea! Oh, yes, and the gift--you will never believe it. I was given a silver 5 tiered candelabra! More than a touch of elegance. Best of all, it converts to a low candelabra. Which I like best.

"I thought all the glory was over, and that the breakfast would be sort of an anti-climax, but after being called to the podium twice for awards. amid great handclapping, I was called for the third time and as I went to the podium everyone stood up-wow--it was unbelievable and my moment of glory."
