Benjamin Griffin to John and Dorothy Griffin / Ogden, UT
We were very pleased to get your letter telling of your arrival home and your trip, taking three days. Without a question it is better to take more time and have no trouble. As a change from home I think it is a good thing for John to take a trip from time to time.
About six weeks and your school work will be over. You have surely made a good record in the job you selected. It takes stick-to-it and cooperation and I am sure John has done all he could to help.
We were surprised and pleased to see Paul and Marolynn and baby. It costs sacrifices and money to have a family but pays a big dividend in the long run. You have something to be proud of in three fine children and eight beautiful grandchildren, and all doing so well.
Everything is about the same with Mother and all of us, as when you were here. Mother gets very restless at times and we have to give her Restlessness Pills every day. It is very lonely for her. She can't
hear me read and can't see to read herself. Nothing on TV that interests her. She begs to go Home back to Logan and we can't convince her there is no home she could go to in Logan.
I think the idea of having a home in Utah and also in L.A. would be fine - quite an investment - something like putting about $50,000 in the saving bank, could be turned into cash most any time. You would save on income tax, I suppose. You would still have taxes to pay on property.
Please forget the $5 on stamp - that was Gordon's birthday gift to John, so he wants you to forget it. A card is all I want on [my] birthday, April 28 or near that. Of course we are are all hoping you do buy in Utah, it would be better for you in driving the car. You would be near stores, etc. etc.
We are thinking of you both real often.
Love, Dad for Mother and Gordon.
