Dorothy Griffin to Marolynn and Paul Griffin

Dearest Paul and Marolynn --

You are a doll, Marolynn, to keep in touch with us--and our tape recorder is back in the shop, as it wouldn't record--so I shall answer by writing. I borrowed a recorder without the microphone, so if you send a tape we can hear it, but for another week we won't be able to tape.

I was delighted. with the pictures -- its the first glimpse of your apartment, and it does look nice! I can't think what more you would want while Paul is in school, unless it would be one on a river or lake.

Speaking of property, I learned. from Clover Moffatt that Larry Scoville is up in Washington State, looking over property, and trying to convince his dad to put money into property up there. Clover said, however, that Ray is very sick, with diabetes as well as a bad heart, and that Elida was just out of the hospital, where it was determined. after 8 days that she has plastic anemia, which doesn sound good at all. Clover says that Larry has a girl living; with him, who calls herself Mrs. Scoville, but that they have never legally married.

Marian keeps asking where the round robin tape is, so get with it and. send us a tape, and tape on one side and send it on to her. You recall you brought the last round robin down at Christmas: We did both sides and sent it on to her, but she likes the idea of one side to a family.

I had a big surprise on Valentine's Day--dad had Eiji's send me a dozen red roses with 3 foot stems Wow!

You saw the ill-fated bridge at, Christmas, with half of it collapsed in the middle--well, with all the rains we have had, last week the whole bridge collapsed, and then it was revealed that the planners had been warned that any bridge put there was hazardous: Now, they say, the freeway may not be connected until 1975! Talk about a legal scandal, Paul: I'm enclosing a picture of it as it is now.

I don't know how it is up there, but here more and, more instructional aides are being hired, at low salaries, and fewer and fewer teachers. Pat Heppe, a graduate of Stanford, is now an instructional aide at high school, and. works every other day. She told, me her take-home pay is a little over $200 a month!

I'm still undecided about a car--the Denlingers told. me today they have a friend who is a mechanic who says none of the 1973 cars are working well--all kinds of troubles due to the smog emission affecting the carburetor. It sounds like the car makers' revenge. Anyway, if that is so, the LTD will be no worse than the others, and they may call them all in in another year because of all of this

Write or tape soon. Love always, Mother
