John Griffin to Mother / LaCanada, CA

Dear Mother,

As you can see I am in Phoenix. I've been here for a couple of days and have one more day to go. We are having a lot of hearings on cotton allotment cases. It has rained ever since I've been here and I just wonder why the hotels are so packed with people. I guess that Arizona has a reputation for being a warm place this time of year.

We are wondering whether anything has been settled on a date for your [50th] anniversary celebration. We are willing to do all that we can to come when the rest can come. School here, however, does not let out until late in June and Bob has a job lined up here so that he has to go to work as soon as school is out. So if it is held in June it will probably be without Bob. I do not see why the Easter vacation is not the best time to hold it. Ben and Marian, Janet and Glen all have several days off at that time and could come if they just put first things first. I have heard that Glen has a job in a hospital at Salt Lake this summer, and I supposed that this is the reason for the strong opposition to the Easter date. Anyway whatever you, Don and Elsie decide will be all right with us. It will be very difficult for me to get away in June but I will manage somehow even if I have to fly up one day and back the next. I know that Bob would like to be there but again he must put first things first and he must earn and save quite a sum of money this summer if he is to continue his education at Stanford.

As I indicated, if you prefer to have an informal reception in the Relief Society room at the 6th ward, that is fine with me, or if as Dad suggests, you would rather just have a dinner with family and close relatives present that is also ok with me. I think though that the date should be fixed right soon so that some definite plans can be made.

Last Sunday evening we had our Scout Sunday and Paul gave a good little talk. Next Monday he receives his "Eagle" award. It is quite a boost to Paul to receive his "Eagle" as he always envied Bob - this award in scouting. Only a very small percentage of boys who become scouts achieve this rank; 1 in 200, and we are proud of Paul for having made it, even though it required quite a lot of pushing.

Bob has at last found an LDS girl that he likes, and we were quite amazed to learn that she was from Ogden and is the daughter of two people that we went through high school with. Her name is Joyce Pugmire, and her father is Ralph Pugmire and her mother Marian. She (mother)was queen at high school during our senior year. We have not let Bob know that we know her parents because he is very funny about those things and would probably quit going with her. She goes to Stanford and is a freshman. Don't mention this in your letters as we do not want him to know.

Well [the[ page is full and it is near bed time. Write often. -- John
