John Griffin to Mother / Montpellier, France
The time surely passes fast. Here it is Thursday of the next week. It seems only yesterday since I wrote...
Our last meeting was an overwhelming success. We had all the places (chairs) taken and there was one that stood. There were 25 there. That is quite an increas over 11 for the time before. We have several friends that are coming out regularly and of course we are glad to see this. Sunday night Frere Creer was quite sick and I had a bad headache. We had a charcoal fire in the hall to try and heat things up, and we were in there for several hours with it. I suppose we breathed too much CO2. anyway you see who is the the strongest of we two. It didn't get me down like it did Frere Creer.
We needn't worry about fires any more for spring has come for good. The last two days we have been going around without overcoats and sweating terribly to boot. We are surely enjoying the wonderful spring weather. Just like May at home.
The work is going fine now. We are all hard at work over our conference which is to be held the 23rd of this month here. We have 4,000 bills to put out between now and then, so I guess we will find some way to keep busy. If we have as good a response as we did last time I don't know where we are going to put them all. We have hired a Policeman this time to but down the rebellious so all ought to go well. I am afraid that if they announce our regular meeting at the conference we will have to get a new hall because we had 25 last time with just regular work.
(Feb 17) We went to La Tosca an opera, last night. It is an exceptionally good opera and Frere Creer had never seen it, so we went. I didn't mind seeing it again, only the leading lady was a great big fat one and that sort of spoiled it for me. We have heard no news about the mission for a long time. The last was that there was a change in the Lyon district and Clarice Manning was working in Lyon now. I believe that I told you that there is to be a missionary meeting down here sometime next week. I think President Nelson will get released and probably a few other changes.
I received the registered letter with ten (dollars) from Roland and Alice. I have written them and thanked them. You asked if the 80.00 (likely Franks) a month would do. Yes as long as I am working in France or Belgium. However the Swiss is a little more expensive. I have managed to keep a little of the extra money that comes every once in a while from Aunt Lilly, etc. So I have a little saved now for our June trip to Paris. However I am going to try and save a little more by that time.
That is sure the rocks (sic) that another paint and paper store is starting up in Ogden. I should think that there is enough by now. Anyway I am surely convinced that if we trust in the Lord, everything will come out for the best. Well, it is time to go to work. We have to put out an awful lot of bills today and I suppose we will be working tomorrow too. About that little picture - don't frame that ugly thing. As soon as my mustache grows out again I will have a good one taken. I was trimming it one day and the razor slipped and cut it off, so now I got it all to do over...
I hope Donny is feeling better by now. It seems like he goes down with that trouble every year. The boxes you sent have not arrived yet. I hope they will come with the next bunch of mail though. And the Patricarchal Belessing, I would like as soon as you can get it copied too. Frere is waiting to go so I'll have to say goodbye.
