Paris   1930

While we were going to school in Paris there were a number of LDS girls that were there either studying art or music, or just "studying". In fact it seemed to me that most of the girls that came over to Paris to study were either girls whose mothers were very ambitious for them, and wanted them to become sophisticated and meet and marry some wealthy man, or were girls who were not popular at home and were sent to Europe with the hope that this would add glamour and make them popular with the boys. Occasionally we would take these girls out in the evening to the Paris night clubs. I recall that there were two sisters names Morris and a girl from Lewiston, Utah named Ludine Rogers. She was a very excellent pianoist. The Morris girls in particular use to go out with almost every released missionary that wanted a fling at Paris before going home. They use to really take the boys for a ride - the most expensive night clubs with the most expensive items on the menu. They took us just once and after that we picked and chose carefully. We use to have some real good times. I recall one night club where we use to go, called "LeBeouf Sur le Foit". The dance floor was small and usually so crowded that all you could do was stand and sway with the music..

There were also attending this school several groups from universities in the United States. One of the groups was from Smiths College and there was in the group a girl from Ogden. Her name was Weeks but I do not recall her first name (Elenor, according to the journal). I remember that she was from a wealthy family in Ogden. At home she would hardly speak to me, but over in France she acted as though we had been very good friends for years. She really was a nice girl though, and we use to exchange ideas and help each-other with our studies. Although most of our time was spent in studying we did occasionally get out and have a good time. Almost every Sunday afternoon we would go on an art tour. There was a brother Larsen from the B.Y.U over there studying art. He was an excellent artist and had several painting exhibited in the Paris Salon while we were there. We would all go to Sunday School in the morning and then out to eat at some nice restaurant after which he would take the group to the Louvre or some other art gallery and tell us all about the paintings. These trips were very interesting and informative.
