John and Dorothy Griffin to the Griffins / Washington D.C.

Dear Mother, Dad, Gordon,, & Elsie

If I expect this to arrive before Christmas I guess I'd better get it off. You never have written to tell me how soon after mailing that other one arrive that I took over to the Airport. Anyway I will write a little, and then take it over to Virginia and have Dot and Snookey add their bit and get it on the 10:30 plane tonight.

We are about as all ready for Christmas as we will ever be. We have all the shopping done and I son going to buy a tree tonight. We are going to decorate it tomorrow or Thursday so that everything wont pile up on Friday, then all we need to do is wait for Santa to arrive. Your package arrived the other day, and we have not opened it yet. Every time you move it something goes (Ma--Ma--j and we are wondering if there is a baby doll in it. We are expecting the usual supply of cloths from each other but nothing very expensive or facy this year.

The M Men's class which I am teaching is planning to provide for a couple of poor families this year so I expect to partake of the true Christmas spirit too for a while. We have a fine bunch of fellows back here and I enjoy my work with them a lot. Sterling Wheelwright is going to have a Christmas organ recital Christmas eve and so between going to that and going around to see all our friends we expect to spend a very enjoyable evening.

The weather man has sort of disappointed us back here. He says that it will be warmer and rain tomorrow and the next day. Not a sign of snow. Ever since the cold spell broke we have had real fall weather and it seems that it will last [until] sometime after Christmas. I have only seen one real white Christmas since I have been back here and it would seem good again to see a lot of snow for the holiday season. I suppose that you have plenty and to spare out home. Here it is the next day and I haven't got this off yet. Things came up and I could not finish it, then last night I had to go to Mutual and so now I will have to get it over to the airport tonight for sure or it will not go. I have never heard from the Civil Service yet about that other Job. I would like to know about it, but on the other hand I am glad to keep on at this salary until after the holidays, as I am paid the better salary for a lot of days I don't work.

I do hope that you all have a very merry Christmas out home this year. Maybe next Christmas you can plan on spending the time with us. We would like to have you. The boy will still be too small to make a long trip like that so I guess if you see him you will have to come out, I will sign off now and leave a little space for Dot and Bob.

Dear Folks

I hope you have a very merry Christmas. Ours is perfect we think so far and it's still two days until the real day. Jack is getting to be so responsive and he's so cute in the way he smiles with one corner of his mouth, and coaxes for his bottle. He is now gaining about 7 or 8 ounces a week, slowing down now that the ones are covered. He's still the best baby I ever saw, and we can get affidavits from everyone who sees him.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Dorothy
