John to Mother / Neuchatel, Switzerland
I suppose you are wondering what has happened to me. I mailed a letter last week and the other day it came back marked insufficient postage. It seems that they are very strict here in Switzerland and that other stationery I had was so heavy that I couldn't send anymore than two sheets without paying a fortune extra. I bought this down in France and every now and then I poke my pen through it, it is so thin. At last it ought to go through all right.
I think I left off in that other letter with our trip to Berne. Well, Wednesday we about froze and so didn't do much of anything except hug fires, make a few visits and keep the hall from freezing up. Thursday morning we got a card telling us to leave at noon for the conference at Besancon. So the afternoon found us on the train headed for Besancon. We stopped off at La Chaux de Fonds and picked up the President, Chuck, his conpanion and Frere Johnson. It surely seemed good to see Chuck again. He has changed some, yet not enough but what you can tell that it is him. We all took the train at 5 o'clock for Besancon. After about a half hour ride we came to France and had to get off the warm Swiss train and get on a cold old French train. We just about froze; the temperature being somewhere around -20. We got to Besancon about 10:30 that night. One of the sisters there had a warm bed all waiting and so we piled in. I slept with Chuck that night and we spent a good long time talking things all over.
Next day we got up and helped the Besancon Elders put out handbills for the conference and bazar they were having. In the afternoon we had one of the best missionary meetings that I have ever attended. It was just wonderful. On Friday night one of the sisters gave us a big dinner.....
