John Griffin to Mother / Grenoble, France
Tonight is the only night I have all week to myself so I am taking the opportunity I have to write home. I suppose you think that last letter I wrote was terrible, but I was feeling so low when I wrote it that it is no wonder. Since then I have taken a different attitude and now I figure that if I do my duty the Lord will take care of the rest and that whether happens will be for the best.
The work continues to be very discouraging and it seems to get worse rather than better, but there may be a reason that I am not able to se so I shouldn't complain. Last night we only had 11 out to meeting; only one saint. All the rest are to a more or less degree ill. The sister that has stomach cancer is about the same. In fact I believe she is a little better tonight. She has an awful lot of faith and she will get well yet. On account of the change of weather, everyone is nursing a bad cold and I think that may have had something to do with our low attendance last night. It was a real good meeting though, and the Spirit of the Lord was surely there. Frere Caldwell left early Sunday morning, and I believe we have better meetings when he is not there. It is getting near time for him to leave and I think it is having some effect on him as it does on most missionaries. However he is a good missionary and has helped me an awful lot this last visit especially. Yet it does seem good to be alone again and be able to do things as you wish to do them.
The weather her is like typical fall weather. Already the highest mountains have received their first coating of snow. The days are wonderful - the lovely Indian Summer days when it is neither hot nor cold, but just right. In the morning it is quite cool and we appreciate the blankets during the night. I like this time of the year better than any other time. For me it is ideal. Ads I tell Frere Middleton, it is ideal football weather. I suppose that at home you are having this wonderful weather too, only you have the football to go along with it.
How is everyone getting along in school? Is Ben still hanging on with the football team. And what is Gordon doing this year? I like so much to hear about you all and what you are doing. I supposed everybody will be greatly changed when I get back, but I suppose I'll be somewhat changed too in lots of ways...
Last Saturday we rented bicycles and rode out into the country. The French countryside is pretty all year around. There is so much moisture that everything stays green and pretty. However they don't have autumn leaves like at home. We had a real good time and got some good exercise. We took some pictures too and when I get them finished I'll send you some.
