John Griffin to Mother / Grenoble, France
Here it is the 2nd of July, 10 months since I left home. Two more and I'll have a year behind me. The time is going right along. it surely passes quickly hp here. We usually find plenty to keep us busy, and that makes the time pass. It seems like Saturday and Sunday are as long as all the rest of the week put together.
I hope that you are all well now, and that you will continue to be so, and the rest of the family too. How is everything going now. Is dad busy at the store. He never writes me any more. I hope that it isn't because I don't write to him (all for himself as he says). These letters are of course for him as well as you. So I'll look for a few more letters from Dad from now on.
Everything is going along about the same over here. Last night we held a testimony meeting and most of the saints gave their testimony. It was a good meeting. We had 19 out which isn't bad considering the heat. I suppose by now it is getting quite warm at home. Every day or so we have a scorcher here... I don't suppose anyone out of our family went fishing this year. I suppose you will miss all those nice fish I used to catch. But do you remember I did catch 7 the last (July) 15th. Does Donny or Gord ever go fishing. Did dad buy the new car yet or was it just a dream?
I supposed Dorothy told you about being solicited as one of three to teach in Ogden next year. I think that's pretty good, don't you. She said that A.B. Foulger was largely responsible, so next time you see him, tell him thanks for me.
Right now I suppose you are either gone or else all up in the air about going somewhere to celebrate the 4th. I don't know what we will do here. It costs so much every time we look out doors. If we can figure out a financial way, we may go up to Aix les Bains, a popular summer resort for all the right Americans and English. Otherwise I suppose we will just lay in bed and sleep late, go to a show and call it a holiday. Here they have a big celebration on the 14th that corresponds to our 4th at home. However about all a holiday over here, is just a day to visit the cafes, get drunk and make a lot of noise. So you see we don't harmonize very much with the holiday spirit.
Last week we rode out in the country on bicycles. We went up to a big paper mill situated up in on of the little canyons around here. After telling them we were Americans they consented to let us visit the plant. It was very interesting to watch how they put logs in at one end of the factory and roll the paper up on big rollers at the other end. The wood is washed and then the pulp is run through big rollers and when finally dry it comes out as paper.
I suppose Ben is making it all right up on the farm. I have not heard from him since he left. How long is he going to stay up there, and what is he going to do next year? It is 8:30 and I must eat breakfast, make out some reports and get out tracting by nine, so you see I must hurry...
