In 1969 John was sufficiently incapacitated that he retired from his job with the Agriculture Department. He got around haltingly but spent a good deal of time in bed or sitting in an easy chair in his bedroom. There was no second back operation and his back caused substantial problems for him for the rest of his days.

As 1968 ended and 1969 started, there were two weddings in Utah. On December 27, Marian Griffin was married to Steve Shipley, and on January 31, Paul Griffin was married to Marolynn Mineer. Each occasion required a mid-winter trip to Utah in December and again in four weeks in January.

John Robert and Shirley settled in Northridge, close to his medical residency in Opthamology at UCLA, Paul and Marolynn settled in a new home in Huntington Beach in the summer of '69 after weekends of househunting enthusiasticly accompanied by Dorothy on occasion. With their families close at hand, there were frequent visits for all to make to each other's homes. John could stand these short trips to Northridge and Huntington beach, and Dorothy just loved to visit. To see everybody, Dorothy and John went back east in 1970 and visited Marian in Columbia, Maryland.
