Once the LaCanada ward was settled into its new meetinghouse, John Griffin's attention turned to the church's local young men's program. Bob was 15 years old and Paul was 11, nearing the age that he would take up activity in the Boy Scout troop. John made known his dissatisfaction with the inactivity of the boy's program and not long afterwards he was called to be the troop scoutmaster. His tenure as scoutmaster would last four years, and although he was called to the stake high council, his life would be remembered mainly for his work in scouting.

John took the troop each month on an overnight outing and to summer camp each summer at Camp Cherry Vallen on Catalina island. Notable outings were a backpack trip to Cooper Canyon in June at the start of summer vacation, and a winter "snow trip", usually to a cabin at Lake Arrowhead, then up to the higher country the next day to find some snow. John's effort bore lasting fruit. Eight boys in the troop achieved the Eagle Scout rank and were awarded the Eagle badge in a group court of honor in 1956. In 1956 John organized and went on a stake young men's trip to the Colorado river where the group made an eight-day guided trip down the river on rafts in the area now covered by lake Powell.
