In the earliest days in LaCanada the family traveled on Sundays to the ward in Burbank. LaCanada was soon split off as a separate ward and met in the LaCanada "Thursday Club". One of the first objectives of the new ward was to build its own meetinghouse. This was largely a local effort as in those days, the Church funded very little of the meetinghouse construction costs. Fortunately there were several homebuilders who were members of the ward and plans were made to build much of the meetinghouse with labor and construction management from ward members. To help raise money for the construction of the meetinghouse, ward members built and sold a house. John Griffin took on the legal work associated with obtaining the property for the meethouse sight and securing zoning permits. Throughout 1952 saturdays were spent by the priesthood in constructing the meetinghouse and the Relief Society brought in a big lunch. The building was completed and dedicated on August 3, 1952. As it was locally designed and constructed, it was of a unique plan, unlike the standard meetinghouses built later, and stands to this day as a beautiful church building in LaCanada.

John and Dorothy's friends from Utah and Washington D.C. would get together in Las Vegas every year over a weekend near Washington's Birthday (Feb 22). This tradition went on for many years.
