Grenoble 1928
We had several members of the Church in Grenoble, some of which were young couples with families. I recall that there was one young fellow of Italian descent (Vigliani, referred to as Vig) who had married a very attractive French girl. They had a boy about three or fours years who was a very cute little fellow and a good friend of the missionaries. I am convinced now that the principle reason why the Italian fellow had joined the Church was that he wanted to come to America and felt that the American missionaries might be able to help him. He was a very unstable fellow.
One day we received word that his wife wanted to see us. We went over to his home and found that he was not there. She handed us a package of letters and asked us to read them. She said that she had found them in his pockets and around the house from time to time. These letters were from a young woman who was also a member of the Church, and whose husband was a traveling salesman. The letters indicated clearly that at least two or three nights a week whenever the salesman husband was out of town, the Italian tailor and the salesman's wife spent the evening together in a local hotel. We confronted the Italian with this evidence and he readily admitted the trysts, and everything else that we suspected.' He did not seem too repentent, but did promise us to discontinue the practice if we would not excommunicate him from the Church. We also had a session with the young woman. It was a messy affair and while we stopped it temporarily I later learned that the repentance was not lasting.
